PhD position in the topic of Computer Optimization of Scaffolds for Bone Regeneration.

Angiogenesis, the growth of new blood vessels from pre-existing vessels, constitutes a fundamental physiological process during the regeneration of many tissues, including bone. It is generally accepted that the establishment of vascular morphogen gradients drives directional sprouting in order to re-establish a physiological oxygen and nutrient supply. Despite an emerging awareness of the relevance of mechanical signals for various cellular processes, e.g. migration, proliferation and differentiation, an in-depth understanding of the role of mechanical signals in the process of sprouting angiogenesis is still missing.
In a DFG-funded collaborative project, we are using a combined in vitro/in vivo/in silico approach to investigate how pull forces from extravascular cells mediate directed sprouting as well as how they are involved in the stabilization of nascent micro-capillary structures and vessel patterning. As part of this project, a PhD position is available to investigate the dynamical interactions between cells and the extracellular matrix during sprouting angiogenesis using mechano-biological computational models.

You will develop computer models of sprouting angiogenesis taking into account the role played by chemical and mechanical signals in vessel patterning. You will work in close collaboration with project partners working in in vitro and in vivo models to inform and validate the computer models.

Your profile
◾A degree in Mechanical Engineering / Computer Science / Mathematical Biology or a related discipline
◾Knowledge of Finite Element Modelling
◾Experience in Programming is required (e.g. C/C++, Matlab)
◾High motivation and strong interest in research
