Postdoctoral Research Fellow or Researcher, 2 positions (field robotics) (# of pos: 2)

Tampere University, Finland

Tampere University and Tampere University of Applied Sciences create a unique environment for multidisciplinary, inspirational and high-impact research and education. Our universities community has its competitive edges in technology, health and society. www.tuni.fi/en

Innovative Hydraulics and Automation (IHA) is doing interdisciplinary research in the field of Fluid power automation, by the bridging of theory and practice with cooperation with industry. Prof. Jouni Mattila leads the research group on mobile manipulation with more than 10 researchers, and his group is part of the IHA at ENS. https://www.tuni.fi/en/research/iha-innovative-hydraulics-and-automation

Mobile manipulation research group lead by Prof. Mattila has a proven track-record with project-based multidisciplinary R&D research dealing with full scale heavy-duty mobile working machines (liikkuvat työkoneet) relevant to Finland-based high-tech companies in both academic and technology transfer projects concerning: autonomous mobile working machines, heavy-duty robotics motion/force controls, machine learning and nonlinear robotic control engineering, and systems engineering in real-world field robotics. We have published widely on these topics during the past years. Our graduates have virtually 100% success rate to be employed by Finland-based high-tech field robotic companies or by their ecosystem. We carry out our research on full-scale experimental field robotics systems at our TAU outdoors lab and with shared research infrastructure with our industrial collaborators in Tampere region.

Job description

We are looking for Postdoctoral Research Fellows or Researchers (2 positions in total) to work on a new research project funded by Academy of Finland we have at IHA.

Research is on autonomous field robotic system with two individual topics: nonlinear control theoretic development dealing with geometric SLAM observer, Visual Servoing and robot controls, and rough terrain mobile manipulator whole-body motion estimation utilizing IMU sensor networks and machine learning in real-world set-up supported by experienced over 10 people research team

Our research and development goals are ambitious, and so are the anticipated techniques and tools to be applied.

See some of our recent works and a running project TITAN on real-world autonomous field robotics (links below e.g. YouTube) The work is mainly composed of development activities, including algorithm and software development, setting of experimental systems, collecting data and performing experiments, projects TITAN (https://www.tuni.fi/en/news/titan-project-teaches-robots-help-force-sensing-exoskeleton  ) and STREAM (more info soon available).

You should have a PhD or master’s degree in non-linear estimation and control, robotics, machine learning in robotics or related area. We expect an ability for both independent scientific work and strong team working attitude, as well as adequate teaching skills. The working language of the group of more than 10 people is English. A successful candidate should have a solid experience in dealing with advanced robotics challenges in stability-guaranteed non-linear controls or in machine learning in robotics and possess strong writing and presentation skills.
Researcher requirements:

  • applicable master’s degree
  • ability and motivation to conduct independent research within research projects

Postdoctoral Research Fellow requirements:

  • applicable doctoral degree
  • capacity for independent scholarly or artistic activity
  • teaching skills required to successfully perform the duties and functions of the position

We appreciate experience of studying and working abroad and contacts to international research community. Ability to supervise M.Sc. and Ph.D. students would be an advantage.

We offer

Fix term project-based contract for 3 years and trial period of 6 months. The expected starting date is as soon as possible, as mutually agreed upon by both parties. The project includes optional up to 6-month mobility period at world leading professor lab abroad.

The salary will be based on both the job demands and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the University Salary System. The position of Researcher is placed on the job demand levels 2-4 and the Postdoctoral Research Fellow is placed on the job demand levels 5-6 (the demand level chart for the teaching and research staff). A typical starting salary in the Researcher position is around 2300 EUR/month and in the Postdoctoral Research Fellow position around 3400 EUR/month.

We offer a wide range of staff benefits, such as occupational health care, flexible working hours, excellent sports facilities on campus and several restaurants and cafés on campus with staff discounts. Please read more about working at Tampere University .

We are inviting you to be a part of a vibrant, active and truly international research community. Interdisciplinarity is highly encouraged, as it allows you to expand your research network and exposes you to new perspectives and ideas to solve complex real-world research problems with high impact and pursue novel research findings. We have a strong commitment to the highest level of scientific research and the provision of high-quality doctoral education.
