A fully funded scholarship for pursuing a Ph.D. degree in Chemical Engineering is available at Texas A&M University at Qatar starting in 2020. The Ph.D. is funded by Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and by Qatar Shell Research & Technology Center (QSRTC) under a collaborative project awarded in Cycle12 of National Research Priorities Program (NPRP) organized by QNRF (NPRP12S-0304-190222).

About the Ph.D. project: Semi-continuous Reactor Engine “NPRP12S-0304-190222” is a 4-year co-funded project by Qatar National Research Fund (QNRF) and the industrial partner Shell to be completed in 2024.

•Background: Develop novel reactor technology by using engines as chemical reactors – operated using renewable energy. The project enables to leverage more than 100 years of development experience in an internal combustion engine and use it as a reactor (new application) while the automobile industry is slowly switching to electric engines.

•Project Summary: Invent electricity-driven a piston reactor by repurposing conventional car engines to make high value-added chemicals directly from for example methane and ethane—strategic for Qatar.

•Technology benefit:

oNovel reactor technology operates using electricity (renewable electricity).

oTechnology suitable for high temperature and/or high-pressure reactions particularly for endothermic reactions.

oThe successful development of the reactor engine would result in a cleaner and greener process especially for energy-intensive reactions such as cracking, reforming, pyrolysis, etc.

The Ph.D. candidate will be working at two locations at Texas A&M University branch in Qatar and on the main campus at College Station in the USA. Additionally, the Ph.D. candidate will be working closely with the industrial partner and another Ph.D. student working on the same project but focusing on the systems-level approaches for the technology.

The highly qualified candidate should:

•Fulfill all requirements to be admitted to the graduate Ph.D. program at College Station in Texas, USA. More information about the admission requirements are found here (

•Hold a master’s or bachelor’s degree in chemical engineering or related field.

•Have some experience in chemical reactors, modeling, process development, and preferably experience in experimental testing to screen different chemical reactions and catalysts.

•Be highly motivated, open-minded, and solution-oriented with a track record of excellent academic and/-or work achievements.

•Fluently in written and spoken English
