The position will be available from 01.12.2020. The employment contract is limited to 3 years.

Tasks:
In the Institute of Fluid Dynamics, a position as PhD student is to be filled which is subject to the approval
of a third-party funded project, with the following range of tasks:
Topic is the enhancement of the extraction rate of rare earth ions by implementing magnetic fields in the two-phase system of organic and aquoues phase. Relevant tasks include
– the construction of experimentals setups, automized by LabVIEW, for lab and microgravity experiments,
– the experimental analysis of the Kelvin-force-driven convection during the mass transfer by means of Mach-Zehnder interferometry and Micro-PIV,
– the study of the magnetophoresis of organic droplets with similar methods and
– active participation in a parabolic flight campaign.

Requirements:
– Experienced experimentalist with strong background in fluid dynamics and optical measurement techniques
– Very good Diploma or Master university degree in either: Mechanical Engineering, Process Engineering, Chemistry, Physics or a comparable discipline
– Preferably prior knowledge in Mach-Zehnder interferometry, Micro-PIV and magnetism
– Self-dependent working style, problem-solving skills in experimental set-up and instrumentation
– Strong communication skills in an international project team
– Stress resistance, willingness to travel for microgravity experiments
